Setup and Operation of the SHERLINE Lathe and Mill
New Instructions Updated February 1997
Reflecting the additions to the new Volume 3 of our Instruction Guide which accompanies each machine purchased, these instructions have been updated to include the latest information. Included at the end of the mill and lathe sections are up-to-date exploded views and part number listings. There are also some new sections in the setup and operation chapter on laying out parts, use of an edge finder and other useful information for the new machinist.
Setup and use of the tools is divided into three sections to help you find the information you need easier and also to keep files smaller so they load faster. This information will be most useful to those who have purchased a Lathe or Mill and are setting up to use it for the first. It duplicates the book you receive with your new machine. For those who have purchased a used machine which came without instructions or those who are comtemplating the purchase of a SHERLINE tool, this information will give you a good idea of how they are actually used.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
To keep file sizes smaller, the Instruction Guide is divided into five sections. Click on any one of the titles below to go to that section. Use your browser's "back" arrow to return to this page. The "Setup and Operation" section applies to both the lathe and mill and should be read first.
- SETUP AND OPERATION
This section offers a brief introduction to machining, some basic precautions and a list of Safety Rules for Power Tools. It covers assembling the basic components of the machines which were disassembled for shipping. It also covers mounting machines to a base, operation of the motor and speed control and a section on adjustments to preload, gibs, backlashe and headstock and tailstock alignment. General lubrication tips are provided as well as a discussion of general machining terms and suggested cutting speeds. Parts ordering instructions plus Sherline's Warranty and Service Policy conclude this section.
- LATHE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
This section covers basic lathe turning techniques, tool shapes and use of the most common accessories for the SHERLINE lathe.
- MILL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS, Model 5000 and 5400 mills
Covered here is use of the Milling Machine plus use of standard tools and accessories for milling. A speed adjustment chart for various cutters and metals is also included.
- MILL OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS, Model 2000 8-direction mill
Covered here is use of the 8-direction mill. The general operating instructions above for the standard mill should be consulted for all general milling questions. These instructions cover the special setup and alignment procedures that relate only to the 8-direction capabilities of the Model 2000 mill.
- USA to EUROPEAN POWER CORD CONVERSION INSTRUCTIONS
Since Sherline's electronic speed control reads the incoming current and automatically adjusts for any power supply, world wide, all you have to do is wire up the proper power cord to use your machine anywhere in the world. This page shows the wire colors and most popular plugs in use around the world, should you ever have to rewire your cord.
